The delay and window size problems in rule-based stream reasoning

In recent years, there has been an increasing interest in extending stream processing engines with rule-based temporal reasoning capabilities. To ensure correctness, such systems must be able to output results over the partial data received so far as if entire (infinite) had available; furthermore, these streamed out soon relevant is received, thus incurring minimum possible delay; finally, due memory limitations, can only keep a limited history of previous facts perform further computations. These requirements pose significant theoretical and practical challenges since rules derive new information propagate it both towards past future time points; result, answers depend on that not yet well arrived past. Towards developing solid foundation for reasoning, we propose study this paper suite decision problems exploited by algorithms tackle aforementioned challenges, provide tight complexity bounds core extension Datalog. All consider solved at design (under reasonable assumptions), prior any data. Solving enables use process input streams incrementally using sliding window, while same supporting expressive knowledge representation language minimising latency consumption.
